The women of TBUSA
While great strides have been made in recent years, women remain underrepresented in science and engineering. Despite women making up half of the total US college-educated workforce, they represent only 29% in science and engineering divisions (Figure 1, Panel A; Science and Engineering Indicators 2018). Takara Bio USA, Inc. (TBUSA) is committed to equality, diversity, and the advancement of women in the workplace, and we are proud of the gender equality and diversity that our demographics represent. Women power 45% of our workforce, but the parity goes beyond raw numbers. Women are strongly represented in every department and across the decision chain, from the R&D scientists fresh out of academia through department managers and executives. Read on to learn about some of the amazing women working at our company.
Even where the statistics conform, we also buck the trend. A woman is the president of the company, itself a rarity in the corporate world. Carol Lou, president of TBUSA since 2005, is "thrilled to support women at our company throughout their thriving, rewarding careers." Women managers also lead the teams that ensure the products we deliver meet our rigorous standards and the quality our customers expect from the Takara, Clontech, and Cellartis brands. While the NSF reports especially low representation in engineering and computer sciences (Figure 1, Panel B), the electrical and mechanical engineer robotics expert for our automation systems (including the ICELL8 systems), is a woman. Additionally, women work as programmers on our bioinformatics team develop data analysis software like the ICELL8 scTCR Analyzer.
Women also drive the research and development (R&D) team that powers our scientific innovations. People like Dr. Magnolia Bostick and other women in R&D leadership roles make our science possible. Business managers like Dr. Suvarna Gandlur, the associate director of the NGS portfolio, and product managers like Dr. Anastasia Potts envision the future of our products and work with R&D to guide them to fruition. "The brilliant women on our NGS team are vital to our company," says Suvarna.
When you have a question about how to use our products, the women on our technical support teams get you the answers and service you need. A dedicated member of our field support team, Dr. Shuwen Chen, helps customers use our technologies for their specific applications. Laurel Barchas is one of several women who apply their love and understanding of science to our technical and marketing communications. "Every day, I am challenged to be excellent, and I give it my all because I know my efforts have a big impact. I feel supported to reach my fullest potential," commented Laurel about her work at TBUSA.
As part of our commitment to supporting women in science, we cohosted the Women's Networking Event at AGBT 2019. Attendees had the opportunity to meet Magnolia, Suvarna, Anastasia, and other NGS team members while enjoying refreshments and networking. Check out our event calendar for other opportunities to meet us!
